Description: Antique Original British Etching, The Old Curiosity Shop, signed Dorothy Woollard R.E. (Royal Society of Painter Etchers), prob. 1910-1930s This classic British etching probably from 1910-1930s was created by Dorothy Woollard R.E. (1886-1986), an important artist and printmaker who is credited with a major revival of British etching in that period. This highly detailed image of a London landmark speaks to a trend toward traditional identity and normalcy in the post WW1 period. The shop depicted in this etching is considered one of the oldest shops in London, having been built in 1567 of old ship timbers and originally operated as a dairy. In the 1800's, the shop was credited with the inspiration of the Charles Dickens novel The Old Curiosity Shop, published in 1841. This etching is in very good condition with the original frame and matting. It is signed in pencil at the lower left margin and in the plate at the lower right with a monogram DW within a rectangle (see photos). Dimensions: Image: 6-3/4" x 6-3/4", Original frame: 13-1/2" tall x 12" wide Condition: Very Good as found condition with original fame and matting. Matte has some staining along the lower edge.
