Description: ARTIST: Carsten Henrichsen is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions multiple times, including such famous auction houses as Bonham’s, Christie’s, Bruun Rasmussen and Van Ham, and who was an exhibitor at the famous Charlottenborg. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen in 1840. His favorite scenes are landscapes, cityscapes – especially from Copenhagen and historical buildings. Today, quite a few of his works can be seen in various Danish art museums. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a stunning rendering of a woman and a boy taking a break in a beautiful hardwood forest interior. The boy is carrying a basket – probably with food for the picnic. As well as being a fine piece of art pleasing to the eye, to me the painting also serves as a window to a bygone time, where women wore bonnets and where life, in many ways, was simpler. On the back of the frame are several inscriptions. The most interesting of these identifies the forest in the scene as Sorgenfri skov/forest, which is a forest situated north of Copenhagen. This inscription also states that this painting was exhibited at Charlottenborg in 1878. On the front of the frame is a small plaquette with the artist’s name. The painting is dated to 1878. Signed: Monogram “CH” in the lower right corner. SIZE: With frame: 64 cm/25.2" * 52 cm/20.5". Without frame: 51 cm/20.1" * 39 cm/15.4". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has minor scratches and stains.
