Description: A hand carved hangi woodblock from the Meiji era (1867 - 1910). It's from a shop that sold stomach medicine. A pharmacy. This was most likely stamped on the outside of the medicine packet. We don't know the significance of the bears When these were made, a professional artist / calligrapher wrote this out on paper. The wood block carvers then carved this exactly as the artist drew it . . . backwards. They were carved backwards so it could be printed. The best way to read these is to look at them in a mirror (or make a print.) Please don't judge the excellent quality of the detailed carving in this by my attempt to make a printed copy. The skilled level of carving in this is an art form few people can do now. This is a part of history. This is how Japan printed pictures and books before lithographs and Gutenberg's ideas of movable type came into use. Most hangi were used then planed down and re-carved when the carving became worn from use. The seasoned cherry wood was valuable. Many were destroyed in the fire bombings of Japan's cities during WW2. (Most hangi were produced in the cities) Hangi are relatively rare. It's 3 7/8 x 2 3/4 inches wide and 7/8 inches thick.
