Description: An 8 1/2 inch wide ORIGINAL ANTIQUE calendar plate, dated 1910, from KELSO WASHINGTON. A very COLORFUL plate with a picture of NIAGARA FALLS with GREEN GOLD and LAVENDER coloring. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE plate dated l910, well OVER 100 years old, over ONE CENTRY old. Plate reads: "Niagara Falls / COMPLIMENTS OF / LAURIE, HOGG & CLAYS, / KELSO, WASH.", in gold leaf lettering. Back reads: "DRESDEN / CHINA". Condition: Plate is in good solid condition. It has typical age wear in the form of small scratches/scuffs, minor paint loss, glaze checking/crazing (in glaze surface only) all authenticating what only a century of time can mark a plate with and a testimony to its age. It has NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. PLEASE NOTE that the plate holder is NOT part of this sale, it is just used to prop the plate up to be photographed. Very RARE from the small town of Kelso Washington. The COLORS are striking and the plate has the proprietors' names advertised on it. Collecting old calendar plates like this is the ultimate in collecting decorative antiques as they 1) have the name of the area, town and state, that they are from, 2) have colorful scenes, pictures, designs, logos on them and, 3) you can date them which authenticates their place in history! This plate mentions Laurie Hogg and Clays, who were the merchants of the business (probably a general merchandise store) that this plate was custom made for. If you looked in an old Kelso Washington Polk City Directories (in local library) from the late 1800 - early 1900 era, you could learn exactly who LAURIE HOGG and CLAYS were, where they lived, what their business was, and in the process, document their business in the annals of Kelso history. This plate may be the only tangible evidence to the existence of these people, this business and this building it was in. Antique china plates like this with the 'Compliments of ... ' were likely made to celebrate the opening of a business, to commemorate the existence of the business, or even given out to customer's during the holidays or when they paid off a note.
