These came from old Alabama homes and date back to the early 1900s or before. The metal on gate identifies it as being made by: COMPOSITE IRON WORKS COMPANY in business during 1873 at 109 Mercer Street later moving to 83 Reade Street NEW YORK, 1884 This company was located in New York City in the late 1800's and specialized in plain and ornamental iron works,railing opera seats.There was a profusion of cast iron foundries in New York,and Composite Iron Works was known for some of the most well executed and elaborate. They were commissioned in 1904 to create an iron alter railing for the famous Mexico Zacatecas Cathedral-Composite Iron Works Co was the only copany in New York willing to undertake such a feat. Great for a special architectural garden accent.Rust but no major breaks and in good shape. The gate can be easily painted to match your style and décor or left as is for a great old patina. What a nostalgic way to add an authentic flavor to your property. The original collector of this fencing began collecting antiques, and antique architectural accesories from the many old homes that were torn down in Montgomery from the years 1935- 1970 and storing them in his warehouse with the intent of eventually building a home with them.
