Description: A beautiful example of nineteenth-century English transferware, this chamber pot, once a necessary household item, now serves as an aesthetic object. Decorated with brown transfers in the Stratford pattern and retaining its original lid, this pot was produced by Henry Alcock of Cobridge, Straftfordshire, England. It can be dated 1884-1890. “PATENT FEB. 12, 1884” is stamped on the bottom. The maker’s mark reads “STRATFORD H. ALCOCK COBRIDGE” without the word “England,” dating it before 1891, when the country of origin was included. Other marks are the raised diamond-shaped registration mark and the painted number “17” above two dots. The registration date is June 8,1883, indicated by the M (June), K (1883), and 8 for the day. (Geoffrey A. Godden, Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks, rev. ed. 1991, pp. 526-527.) This chamber pot includes the original lid and is in very good antique condition with normal wear for its age. The handle is missing, presumably broken and removed. On the interior of the bowl are two small cracks in the glaze that do not seem to penetrate the clay body and do not appear on the exterior. Fine cracks in glaze near broken handle do not penetrate to interior. The only chip is on the bottom and cannot be seen when placed on a surface. (See pictures.) Height is 8 inches with lid. The bowl is 5 ¼ inches high without the lid. The pot is 8 ½ inches in diameter. The lid is 9 ¼ inches in diameter.
