Description: Antique French Watercolor, Portrait of a Woman, “Les Bulles de Savon” (Blowing Bubbles), After Charles Chaplin (1825-1891), Signed This beautiful antique French watercolor depicts a young woman seated beside her spinning wheel and blowing soap bubbles. It is marked with the name, “Aude P…” (the last name is not completely legible) and “D’après Chaplin” (after Chaplin). The name “Adèle P…” could be the signature of the female artist who painted it or possibly the name of the model, “Adèle Priestley”, Charles Chaplin’s niece. This watercolor was done after the painting “Les Bulles de Savon” painted in 1864 by Charles Chaplin (1825-1891), French painter. Chaplin’s painting was exhibited in 1864 at the Salon in the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris, where it was acquired by the French State. According to the website of the Musée d’Orsay, the painting was first in the collection of the Musée du Luxembourg from 1864 to 1889, at the Louvre from 1889 to 1891, at the Château de Fontainebleau until 1934, then back at the Musée du Louvre from 1934 to 1939, at which time it was given to the city hall of Les Andelys in Normandy, where Chaplin was born. Sadly, the painting was destroyed in the fire at the city hall in 1940 during the Battle of France. Matted, this watercolor is in very good condition with the exception of slight warping of the paper and signs of wear on the mat. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page. This watercolor will be an authentic French addition to your décor or to your collection.
