I do not remove caps to check stems (I don't want to risk breaking anything). There could be chips or a crack to the stem that is hidden by the cap. I'm not trying to be devious, if a cap is tight I leave it alone.Sometimes caps are floppy or don't lay perfectly flat, if it's due to an obvious problem with the stem I will let you know. All imperfections may not be shown in photos, but I do try to photograph the worst if it exists.
