Description: Antique Framed Cross-Stitch Sampler on Linen - Mid to Late 1800s, Folk Art Embroidery Dutch This charming, framed cross-stitch sampler likely dates back to the mid to late 1800s, a time when needlework was a cherished art form for young girls in America. Created on what appears to be linen, this piece features an array of symbols and motifs, offering a window into a young girl’s world of dreams and daily life. Samplers like this were often sewn under the guidance of family members or schoolteachers and passed down as treasured family heirlooms, showcasing the artistry and personal expression of their young makers. Above the alphabet there is stitching that could be the date, but it is done in white thread and hard to read. The sampler includes a beautiful variety of images: a boat, diverse animals, trees, flowers, hearts, and scenes of daily life, such as women carrying water from a well with yokes and buckets. The artist stitched the alphabet across the top, though it has faded with age, and the initials "IHS" appear on the upper right, which might represent the young girl who created it. Additionally, the sampler features motifs associated with Dutch culture, suggesting the influence of Dutch immigrant communities in Iowa, where this piece was purchased. I am unsure if it was stitched in America or the Netherlands. Due to its age, there are a few small tears at the top of the linen, along with areas of discoloration, but the sampler has been carefully preserved within a 22.5 x 16.5-inch frame, with a felt background to protect this piece of history. The frame itself is in excellent condition, and to preserve the integrity of the needlework, the sampler has not been removed for further inspection. Condition Notes: This is an antique, preloved item. I have included multiple photos to show its beautiful details and any signs of wear. Please review all photos carefully and feel free to message me with any questions or requests for additional images. This sampler is a unique piece of folk art that tells the story of a young girl’s world more than a century ago—truly a beautiful addition to any vintage collection. All the information that I have researched and know I have passed on here.
