Description: Antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Gilt and Silver Hair Pins Popular in Southern China, Malaysia and Singapore up to the early 1900’s these highly prized Peranakan Chinese hairpins or ‘chuchok sanggul’ were used by Peranakan women (‘Nyonya’) to hold their coiled hair buns, a popular hairstyle which reached its peak in the late 19th Century. ‘Nyonya’ in Malacca and Singapore traditionally used a set of three pins which were generally used for decorative purposes. This collection of Peranakan hairpins of the style are believed to date from around the late 19th century and are fine examples of the style. While the marks are difficult to decipher the gilded brass pin has incomplete markings with the others reading 新勝源 'Xin Sheng Yuan and what is believed to be 萬春 'Wan Chun, an artisan from Pei County in Jiangsu Province. While the pins have significant scratching after what seems to be many years of use, these blemishes appear to the underside of the pins where they have rubbed upon each other as would be expected but otherwise presenting in good antique condition. These highly sought after chuchok sanggul in the traditional style of the late 19th Century would suit any collector.
