Description: Rare to the market this pair of Thomas Dub silver candlesticks are from the estate of an Austrian Jewish woman who immigrated to the United States as a young child prior to WW2. The family had lived in Wein, Vienna, where both parents and grandparents operated a photography studio. The candlesticks stand 10" tall, measure at 210 grams each, and are not weighted. Each has the Thomas Dub mark at the base and two marks of the profile of Diana at the center of a 5 petal flower representing 800 silver. Thomas Dub worked in Wein Vienna 1872 until his death in 1889. Heavily decorated with geometric design, they are unusual for that period. Art Nouveau was the style of the time with a more fluid, graceful design. However, a new influence was emerging in Vienna called the Secessionist movement, which was a precursor to art deco. This would be a perfect example of this. I am not a silver collector, I was just very fortunate to have come across these very special candlesticks and have enjoyed researching their importance. Obviously crafted by a highly skilled silversmith, these are perhaps to be considered museum pieces. I have decided to sell them as found with some tarnish because I think they would benefit from a professional cleaning. As the saying goes, do no harm. I live in a rural area, and this service is not available to me. Other than the moderate tarnishing, they are in great condition with no noticeable dings, dents, or bends. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional photos.
