Description: This is an antique Arts and Crafts bronze or brass ship gimbal wall sconce and/or lamp. I am uncertain as to exactly how old it is, but given its Arts & Crafts design, I would estimate it dates sometime from the 1890s to the 1920s. Please use your judgment. When standing up as a lamp, it measures 8 1/2 inches tall (21.6 cm). The base measures 5 inches x 5 1/2 inches (12.7 cm x 14 cm). I did some preliminary research but was unable to find anything quite like this one. I wish I knew its history! Surprisingly, electricity started being used in boats in the 1880s. The center piece (gimbal?) swings back-and-forth to keep the light level as the vessel rolls in the sea. The piece has some issues. When standing up as a lamp, the swinging piece stands a little crooked. This could be because both of the arms holding it are a little bent. It is missing the socket. One of the screws is damaged on top, though it is still holding well. There is scattered wear to the surface. Even given the damage, I have a feeling this came from a very nice boat/ship. It weighs 1 pound 5 1/2 ounces (608 g).
