Description: This is an interesting, and decorative piece of antique mining memorabilia. Dating from the latter part of the 19th century, or the early 20th century, this old style helmet is made from an extremely hard and stiffened dark brown leather. With wide brim and comb like seam to the crown section, and a lighter, more unfinished leather to the inside. I cannot be sure of its country of origin, but it was sourced here in the U.K. and it’s likely from here or perhaps France or Belgium. There are no distinguishing marks to the item, with the only type of feature being a number 7 pencilled to the inside. I’m not certain as to why leather was the material of choice for this type of helmet, but it’s was made well before the advent of modern plastics, and it’s possible that metal ones may have posed a risk of causing a spark, which could have had catastrophic implications with gases underground. The helmet measures 27cm x 22.2cm across the width and depth of the brim. Approximate height of the crown is 9.5cm. The condition is good for its age and use. Naturally, this is a utilitarian piece, not a fashion accessory, and there are signs of normal age and use. The leather has a deep and dark brown colour, with a nice age related patina. There are some normal light contact marks in places, and some lighter white flacks or marks to the forehead area of hat (see images), but none of these detract. The brim has a very slightly clipped appearance to one side, and it’s possible it was made this way, or it has had a period repair, but it’s all part of its history and isn’t detrimental to its appearance whatsoever. All in all, an interesting and nice display piece in the right setting.
