Description: Andre Kertesz Day of Paris Day of Paris. Photographs by Andre Kertesz. Edited by George Davis. Lacking the dust jacket designed by Alexey Brodovitch. Book designed by Peter Pollack. George Davis, editor. J.J. Augustin Publisher, New York, 1945. 148 pp. First edition. Small quarto. Numerous black and white illustrations. Andre Kertesz's first American publication appeared after he had been living in New York for almost ten years. Taken during the 1920s and 1930s, but not appearing until the end of World War II, the images have a wistfulness that make them some of his most appealing. In The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century Vince Aletti writes, "Though Day of Paris is full of cityscapes.... the photographer is always alert to the human heart of the city, and even his pictures of figures passing on the street are engaging." As Parr and Badger explain, "In the end, Day of Paris, despite the presence of the radical Brodovitch, is deeply nostalgic in tone. In the uncertain days following the war nostalgia for prewar Paris was both inevitable, and probably an important part of the healing process." A true classic containing some of Kertesz's most famous photos! Good. Darkening to the spine. Chipping and fraying to the spine with tears in the cloth. Substantial foxing to the boards. Pinkish stain to the lower right hand corner front board. Two circular stains to the rear board. Scattered very light foxing the fore edges. Internally, moderate foxing to the endpapers, half title page, title page and to the pages. Some of the foxing is visible to some of the images. Hinges sound. All pages tightly bound in. Unmarked. Scarce.
