Description: And I Still See Their Faces - Images of Polish Jews 1996 First Edition oversized book with 232 beautifully illustrated pages This is a very nice used 1996 First Edition of the oversized book And I Still See Their Faces - Images of Polish Jews (Fotografia Zydow Polskich I ciagle widze ich twarze) by Anna Bikont and Lech Majewski as published by the Shalom Foundation, the organizer of an exhibition about Jewish Life in Poland before the 1939 Nazi invasion of Poland and during the Holocaust. In 1994, the Shalom Foundation in Warsaw made a public request for photographs of Polish Jews and has since built an archive of some 9,000 images. Drawn primarily from nameless family albums, many of these photographs were abandoned by their owners or hidden for safe-keeping during World War II. Most were submitted by non-Jews, and the remainder from survivors and their children from all over the world. The big and heavy 11 x 15 inch, 232-page flexible cover book contains formal studio portraits, family photos, school photos, pictures of babies and newlyweds, snapshots of middle and upper middle class Poles in different cities, Jews working in a machine shop, cooks, printers, Jews selling their merchandise at markets, …. …. Jewish men in World War I uniforms, families on the beach, as well as poor Jews in rural areas of Poland. There are also pictures taken during the Nazi occupation - the round-ups and deportation of Jews, work camps for Jews, Jewish ghettos in Warsaw and Lodz, the ID of an inmate at Auschwitz Concentration Camp, etc. From among 9000 photographs collected for the 1996 exhibition, several hundred photos were selected for this book. Many people in the pictures were not identified but a list of all the known names of the families in the book fills two pages at the end. Maybe someone will recognize an image? Everyone still has hidden hopes to find traces of their family members, and these rare pictures may be the only trace of a person, a family, or community. Our photos show only the actual beautifully illustrated book that we are offering for sale. The text in And I Still See Their Faces - Images of Polish Jews is in both English and Polish, and the list of names of the families in the book fills four pages in the back. The actual cover of this book (as shown at the top of this listing covered by a dust jacket) is a haunting blank white cover with a solid black image of a deckle-edged photograph without a picture in it. This 28 year old book is in nice used condition and still has its original dust jacket which shows wear. No odor.
