ANCIENT GREEK LEKYTHOS RED FIGURE URN, MUSCULAR NUDE MAN, Ca. 330 B.C

Description: This is an original ancient Greek lekythos pottery form urn. This urn has a black ground type decoration with a red figure design. The urn dates circa 330 B.C to 450 B.C. As we have seen various dates mentioned for this form from time to time we have presented the entire time framework. Experts on this specific type of ancient Greek pottery will certainly be able to pin down a somewhat tighter date framework. This urn depicts a muscular nude man holding a staff who has a cloak draped over his arm. The man is probably intended to represent an athlete. A lovely antiquity executed by a highly skilled ancient Greek artisan over 2,300 years ago. The urn measures 5 7/8 inches tall by 2 3/8 inches across the shoulder. The weight is 6.7 ounces. This is a type/form of urn which was used in ancient Greece to preserve ointments & perfumed oils. This specific shape was useful in controlling the flow of content & preventing waste. This urn has a thick top lip, a tubular neck with a taper, & a cylindrical body. There is a strap handle which connects the shoulder to the neck. This is an ancient form of wheel thrown pottery. While this size is most often associated with the storage of perfume the somewhat larger & significantly larger urns of a similar shape were commonly used for the storage of olive oil in ancient Greece. Provenance: The example we are offering was previously in the Clarke Hess collection in Lititz, Pa. U.S.A. In the Hess collection estate auction this was listed on the Clarke Hess inventory as "Attic Lekythos Urn 4th Century B. C." Previous to ownership by Clarke Hess this urn was owned by Magna Graecia in Germany. Earlier in it's history, as of 1923, the urn was residing in the Hegerc Collection in Germany. There is generally only light surface wear. Most of the surface shows a very pleasing & subtle semi gloss patina from age. There are slight earthen mineral deposits here & there. There is a shallow surface flake measuring 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch off of the left shoulder. The neck was broken in several places long ago. When this would have occurred the top section would have become detached. But, these cracks/breaks were confined to the thin neck area. The top circular projecting wide lip area did not receive any damage. Also, the strap handle did not receive any damage. The cracked pieces in the neck area were carefully glued back in by a former owner some time in the past. There are just two tiny chips missing off of the pottery on the area of the neck. One chip measures 1/16 inch by 1/8 inch & the other chip measures 1/8 inch by 1/8 inch. There is a 1/16 inch by 3/16 inch shallow surface flake off of the top section over the shoulder at the 9:00 o'clock position. All of the decoration is entirely original in all respects. There are no touch ups of any kind to the paint decoration. There are no replaced & no fabricated pottery components of any kind. This urn has been black lighted by us. No concealed flaws of any kind show up under the black light. Any flaws present are visible with the naked eye & are not concealed in any way.
