Description: The Botijo Jug is a Spanish vessel which has been around since The Bronze Age. It is used for water, oil, or wine. They can also be made of glass and metal, but traditionally they were made of clay and were used for drinking water. They were unglazed so that some of the water would seep through the clay and evaporate on the outside, creating a barrier that would keep the water inside cool. They can come in different shapes and sizes. This example is an antique 19th century piece. As it is glazed it was most probably for wine. Basically a porcelain whisky barrel. This piece is of a very iconic sculptural form that works extremely well as a piece of art and a decorative ornament. More commonly these are painted with artwork of just animals. This piece is rare in that it has a scene depicting a bullfight. Height 22cm. Width 25cm. As they are Faience ware and a more delicate earthenware that is a functional object, antique pieces are often heavily chipped. This piece is of museum condition. A wonderful piece of Mediterranean history evocative of the world in another time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- International buyers are responsible for import fees and any additional costs.
