Description: American School ca. 1980, The Two Friends, Excellent Expressionist, Listed Artist An excellent find, of real interest, from a North-of-Boston flea market! This fine quality gouache by an important artist of the Rockport school, in a style recalling German Expressionism of the 1920's, depicts two female friends (or romantic partners?), the one on the left in a protective attitude towards the shorter lady on the right. The author is Charles Stepule (1911-2006), many of whose works are listed in the Artprice.com online database. The works I see from his hand via Artprice are views of the Rockport, Massachusetts harbor, and surrounding landscaoes, all skillfully done. According to a short bio I found online, starting in 1958 Stepule had his own gallery in Rockport from which he sold his paintings. This one, however, is a departure from his usual mode and is, in my view, more personal and compelling than those scenic studies. Dimensions are about 8.5 inches by 6.25 inches (sight), well framed in a mat and frame measuring about 18 inches by 14.5 inches. I am speculating that the framing job is original to the painting, and was displayed this way in Stepule's gallery. Condition of everything is very good. So modestly priced! Shipping within the U.S. will be $30. If you don't need the frame, shipping will be $12. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
