Description: Incredible to find in any condition, this American Conservatory mandolin is a century and a quarter old and completely structurally sound, fully playable and still making music after surpassing a lifetime of playing. The craftsmanship of this mandolins builder and adherence to exacting standards is exemplified in this mandolins longevity. Constructed from the worlds most sought after tone woods, this mandolin was hand made from twenty two Brazilian rosewood staves, a straight grained old growth Adirondack red spruce top and Honduran mahogany neck. It is heavily adorned with hand fit binding of alternating African ebony and Mother Of Pearl. The ebony fret board has hand scrimshawed Mother Of Pearl inlays. The Tortoise shell pick guard and sound hole rosette also feature genuine Mother Of Pearl. The mandolin has just been professionally setup, lightly cleaned and restrung with GHS ultra light strings. The action is low, neck is straight and the mandolin plays nicely across the fret board with no buzzing or dead spots. The intonation is excellent, no harsh overtones or drones and there is plenty of room for future adjustment at the bridge. The tuners function and hold pitch better then they should after 125 years of use, but do have some play. There are two professionally repaired humidity cracks on the top(Pictures #1, 2 & 3). These have been cleated from the interior with cross grain spruce cleats and will not reopen. The pictures show the aesthetics well. There is some playing wear, a few small scratches and dings but overall is in as good a condition as possible after a century plus of playing. This mandolin boasts a powerful voice. The volume and projection is surprising from such a small instrument. Just as precision and detail of the mandolin's construction was deliberate by the builder, so is the tone. This mandolin was designed to acoustically cut through a band full of brass horns and banjos. It's inherent design combined with over one hundred years for the finest Brazilian rosewood to properly mature produces a sonic gem that is irreplicable by any other instrument. Bright crisp highs with great sustain define the treble end complimented by complex and deep bass end, both tide together with clear mids. This mandolins versatility spans genres and has potential to fill any role commonly preserved for modern mandolin.I am happy to answer questions. This mandolin will ship carefully packaged and fully insured as soon as payment is received.
