Acquired from the original owner by the owner. Amelia Peláez was a student at the National School of San Alejandro, where she was influenced by academic Impressionism through her teacher Leopoldo Romañach. She held her first exhibition in 1924 and later expanded her studies in Paris under the guidance of Liz Pinzón, a prominent Panamanian artist known for her skill in shaded drawings of a distinct universe. After this experience, she began to experiment with modernist painting, as well as delving into the creation of ceramic pieces and stained glass windows. Among her notable works are "La costurera" (The Seamstress), "Gudinga" (1931), "Las dos hermanas" (The Two Sisters, 1943), and "Las muchachas" (The Girls, 1943). An example of Peláez's talent is the exterior mural of the Hotel Habana Libre on La Rampa, which was created in 1957. She also represented Cuba at the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennale. In Amelia Peláez's work, one can focus on the masterful use of the prism that the artist created through the assimilation of Cubism and other modernist innovations. Her interpretations of the form and colors present in Cuban architecture and flora are striking in their rich diversity. However, beneath this color, there is a transmission of nostalgia, eroticism, and fantasy. This deeper layer is perceptible to the sensitive viewer and often peeks through the complex surface of the pieces. The artist herself admitted that her art represented a subjective response to the external world, in which these elements make themselves present.AMELIA PELAEZ. Grabado. Serigrafia / cartulina.
