The cartouche that resembles an olive is ornately decorated on both sides of the handle. The mark on these spoons is Alpaca, with a picture of that animal. Alpaca is one of many names for what is more commonly called German Silver or Nickle Silver. It is 60% Copper, 20% nickle, and 20% Zinc. Not really silver at all. This metal is not shiny in the same way that silver is. Tablespoons are sort of the unglamorous workhorse of the silverware world. They do not have the pizazz of the berry shells and jelly spoons, nor do they fit into the neat counts of place settings. But they are there for serving regular portions of food, and no matter what one does, there comes an event where there are just not enough tablespoons. The reason we have them can be symbolized by a person known as Lucretia Borgia. She was a famous poisoner, so dinner at her house was fraught with peril, as they say in romance novels. The custom of serving from a common dish (which actually is much older than LB, but so is poisoning) arose. The 5 tablespoons serving spoons offered here measure about 8 1/2". These are not pieces of new tableware. These items show the patina of an unknown number of years of use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. The pattern is crisp and clear. These spoons have been carefully used and well cared for.
