Description: Up for sale is an extremely rare, pre-owned antique Alfred Stellmacher Pre Amphora Turn Teplitz Bohemian Dual Handle Pillow Vase / Urn. This listing is for a great example of German Turn Teplitz Pottery. It is a two handled urn / pillow vase made Alfred Stellmacher. THIS PIECE IS PRE-AMPHORA. This gem dates circa 1860-1890. Measures approximately 8.25" tall to the top of the handle and 7" wide from handle to handle. The "pillow" width of the vase is approx. 3" wide. It was hand painted and decorated with bas relief foliage. All of the flowers and leaves are outlined in gold. The handles and four feet are washed in gold. The handles appear to be either the head of a horse or a dragon resting on the bottom of each branch. It has FOUR feet which is very unusual. The flowers seem to be poinsettia on the front and back. Alfred Stellmacher, founded the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Factory in 1859, and produced fanciful, sculptural creations noted for their fine design and quality. Many feature applied natural motifs, This work of art has the Alfred Stellmacher red mark and it appears to have an impressed set of numbers - 3121. As you may know, an amphora is a type of two-handled Grecian vase. But the name Amphora, which was stamped on many wares dating to the late 1800s and early 1900s, also refers to art pottery produced in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia during the Art Nouveau era. The first Amphora manufacturer was Reissner, Stellmacher & Kessel. This company used a red "R St. K" mark beginning in 1892. This company was founded by Alfred Stellmacher for his children. This company is recognized as the best in Amphora. For reference refer to "The House of Amphora 1890-1915" by Richard Scott. This vase is in excellent antique condition for its age. There is one chip on the tip of one of the feet and some fine surface crazing on the ivory part of the vase. Incredible for something made between 1859 and 1890. Remember that you are looking at an antique item that was used. Considering the age of this vase of over 100 years since its creation, it is in lovely condition. Again, given its age, there are a few condition issues. Please see the last few photos for these issues as this piece is being sold "as is".Issues - small chip on the tip of one of the feet- mild areas of crazing as normal for a piece this ageConsidering that this is approximately 120 years old, wear is almost a given. This piece is quite rare, but I will accept reasonable offers. I acquired a large collection of Amphora recently, so please see my other pieces being posted over the next few weeks.
