His first training was purely self-taught. In 1775 he moved to Rome. He belonged to the German artistic circle around Jakob Philipp Hackert, Johann Christian Reinhart and Joseph Anton Koch also belonged to this group. Between 1792 and 1796, together with Reinhart and Jacob Wilhelm Mechau, he created a series of 24 Mahlerian-etched prospectuses of Italy. This consists of 72 individual etchings and was published by Johann Friedrich Frauenholz in Nuremberg. In 1797 he moved to Vienna. There he was hired by Prince Esterházy as gallery director.
