AGRICULTURE (Lot of 4 Books) Genetically Engineered Food & Sustainable Farming

Description: Lot of 4 books related to agriculture Small Farm Agriculture in Southern Europe: CAP Reform and Structural Change First published in 1998, this volume features specialists in agricultural economics who have provided case studies on small farms in northern and central Portugal and southern and central Italy. The collaboration is a result of an early 1990s research project on small farm agriculture in Portugal and Italy and the likely impacts of the Common Agricultural Policy. It recognises that small farms have become an unexpected yet durable aspect of the agricultural landscape since World War II. As small farms represent 95% of the number of farms in Portugal and Italy, the contributors provide some much needed analysis of an often overlooked aspect of the agricultural sector. Genetically Engineered Foods: Assessing Potential Allergenicity Advances in biotechnology have the potential to bring foods containing proteins derived from genes of non-food origin into the marketplace. In 1996, the International Food Biotechnology Council and the ILSI Allergy and Immunology Institute jointly developed a decision-tree approach based on available data, and recommended that several factors be considered, including the primary amino acid sequences and physiochemical properties of proteins derived from non-food sources compared with those known allergens. To evalute whether more contemporary research findings can be incorporated into the decision tree, the National Center for Food Safety and Technology organized a symposium in December 2000 to summarize the current understanding of food allergy and food allergens. In this volume, international experts from academia, government and industry review the issues important in assessing the potential allergenicity of foods derived from genetically engineered foods. Sustainable Food and Agriculture Over the past two decades a growing movement has emerged to question the role of the agricultural establishment in promoting practices that contribute to such problems as topsoil depletion, groundwater contamination, the decline of family farms, escalating costs of production, and the disintegration of economic and social conditions in rural communities. Now gaining increasing support and acceptance within mainstream agriculture, this movement for sustainable agriculture integrates three main goals - environmental health, economic profitability, and social and economic equity. Digging Deeper: Inside Africa’s Agricultural, Food and Nutrition Dynamics This volume attempts to dig deeper into what is currently happening in Africa's agricultural and rural sector and to convince policymakers and others that it is important to look at the current African rural dynamics in ways that connect metropolitan demands for food with value chain improvements and agro-food cluster innovations. It is essential to go beyond a 'development bureaucracy' and a state-based approach to rural transformation, such as the one that often dominates policy debate in African government circles, organizations like the African Union and the UN, and donor agencies.
