Description: Adriaen van de Venne (Jacob Cats), EMBLEM BOOK ILLUSTRATION - DONKEY EATING VINES etching 1656 The sheet is 5 1/4 BY 6 3/8 inches and is laid paper with no watermark. It is singed int he plate, lower center: A. V. fn (for Adrian van de Venne made it). This was an illustration in a Jacob Cats emblem book printed in 1656. J. Cats - Ouderdom, Buytenleven, en Hof-gedachten, op Sorgh-Vliet - Amsterdam, by Jan Jacobsz. Schipper, 1656. Jacob Cats, also known as Father Cats (born Nov. 10, 1577, Brouwershaven, Zeeland, Spanish Netherlands - died Sept. 12, 1660, Zorgvliet, near The Hague) was a Dutch poet, a magistrate and high official. He was enormously popular as a writer of emblem books, consisting of woodcuts or engravings with verses possessing a moral. His Mirror of Old and New Times (1632) contains many quotations that have become household sayings in the Netherlands, and he used it to express the ethical concerns of Dutch Calvinists, especially about love and marriage. Sadly, we have no idea what the emblem actually means and the Dutch phrase at the top is not much assistance.
