Description: In November 1980 Kevin Brownlow's restoration of Abel Gance's Supreme achievement, Napoleon, was premiered at the London Film Festival. Overnight Gance, whose reputation had been in decline since the 1920s, was re-established as ont of the most innovative filmmakers of his generation. Yet despite the chorus of praise which followed repeated screenings of Napoleon, there has been little attempt at coming to terms with the true nature of Gance's contribution to the cinema. Norman King's method, in this pioneering study, is to combine a detailed examination of Gance's film-making, including his meticulous screenplays, with a reconstruction of the important and lively debates which took place around Gance's films in France in the 1920s. Gance is thus set in a context which allows an understanding of both the revolutionary and reactionary tendencies in his work. In the process, Norman King has added greatly to our knowledge of French cinema during a vital part of its history.
