Description: As more than one writer has pointed out, the treatment of syphilis requires a knowledge of the whole field of medicine. The corollary is that a physician who undertakes to write a text on syphilis has in effect taken all medicine to be his province, while a physician who undertakes to write a synopsis of syphilis has undertaken the task of compressing all of medicine between the covers of a book of strictly limited size. It is hoped that these things will be borne in mind by the reader of this book. Because of limitations of space much that is important was necessarily omitted, many phases of the disease worthy of more extended treatment were necessarily discussed briefly, and dogmatism, or at least the appearance of that evil, was frequently almost inevitable. Furthermore, to avoid repetitions which would have added materially to the length of the book or which would have resulted in other omissions or a more cursory handling of other subjects, a strict outline has been followed. Such an artificial arrangement has obvious disadvantages, for few diseases, and least of all syphilis, permit regimentation. The gain in clarity, however, and the saving of space, seemed to justify the arrangement. To avoid frequent repetitions the references are placed at the end of the book; I should have preferred to have them at the end of each chapter. I desire to express my appreciation to The Macmillan Company for permission to quote from Syphilis and Its Treatment by William A. Hinton; to Dr. c. H. Stokes and to his publishers, W. B. Saunders Company, for permission to quote from Modern Clinical Syphilology and
