This is a tobacco plantation, which is clear from the labels and image content. One of the recordings calls the place Mbanga. According to contemporary writings, this place is associated with the growing areas of the Tabakbau- und Plantungsgesellschaft Kamerun AG. There is a certain probability that these are the former plantation areas of this company. (For more detailed insight for self-verification, see our provided image files). Another shot shows the visit of Wilhelm Solf and his staff to the plantation. Since Solf only visited the West African colonies on his second trip to Africa in his office as Colonial State Secretary, the present photographs appear to be from 1913. The photos have the following specific caption: View of the establishment / General view of Bamumdorf / View of a large tobacco field / Workers in the tobacco field / Sorting house. Fermentation house / Visit Solf with accompaniment in front of the seedbeds / Schürings in the tobacco field / Mbanga planting. The historical photographs come from the German colonial period itself; it was not until the war began in August 1914 that the areas were expropriated and handed over to other powers. In the case of the Tabakbau- und Plantungsgesellschaft Kamerun AG, the areas were probably completely lost after the World War, while other companies were able to buy back the former plantations. The very interesting views show tobacco fields and numerous functional buildings for tobacco production. One view is a (small) panorama made up of three parts to show a tobacco field in its entirety. Some photos show the African workers standing in the field. The documented visit by Wilhelm Solf also suggests that it must have been a plantation of significant size if it attracted a visit from an imperial state secretary. Finally, the inclusion of the Bamum village [the Bamum ethnic group] is also something special; their village was probably close to the established plantation. The inscriptions also indicate Schürings in the field; this may have been a former overseer or a family resident and active on the plantation. The photo "Planting Mbanga" also shows laid rails and small functional buildings at the edge of the route, possibly the infrastructure of an associated small railway.
