Please click here to view my other antique and vintage Spanish Colonial style bells and decor offerings.Although you will find all sorts of fantastical stories about this style of bell in an effort to validate $20k pricing (salvaged from pirate shipwrecks, washed up on Caribbean beaches, from ancient Egypt, etc), I've been collecting and researching these bells for the past 20 years and believe to have the largest collection in the world. They were cast in 1950s' Mexico for the tourist market with commemorative Mexican independence dates, the same way U.S. bell souvenirs are emblazoned with '1776' (dates on bells are rarely a production date). They were produced a few inches tall, up to 12"...the smaller ones being fairly common, while the larger ones are quite rare. The design was created by making impressions into the sand mold by found objects before casting. Patina was applied at the time of manufacture.
