This coin is graded Choice AU (Almost Uncirculated) by NGC Ancients, with a Strike rating of 5/5 and a Surface rating of 2/5. The NGC holder notes, "brushed". The coin is silver and is approximately 16mm in diameter. Obverse: laureate head of Jupiter right. Reverse: Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus with thunderbolt in pediment and acroteria (roof decorations) above.Inscription: M.VOLTEI.M.F The catalog designations for this coin are: Crawford RRC 385/1; Sydenham 774. Beautiful cabinet toning to obverse and reverse. The coins of this series are discussed by Liv Mariah Yarrow in her book, "The Roman Republic to 49 BCE Using Coins as Sources" (Cambridge University Press, 2021): "This is the earliest representation of a temple on the Roman coin series. The temple and many of the buildings on the Capitoline were destroyed by fire in 83 BCE, restoration begun by Sulla in 80, but it was not rededicated until 69 BCE" (Fig. 4.6, p. 169). This coin forms past of a series of (at least) five coin issues by the same moneyer in this year of 78 BCE (RRC 385/1-5), each intended to commemorate a major religious festival (Yarrow 2021, p. 168).
