Description: Sponsors' Edition THE LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTONby John MarshallFive VolumesIllustrated Description Full leather; Size Approx. 5 3/4 X 8 3/4. Published by The Citizens' Guild of Washington's Boyhood Home; 1928. Details: This is a fine, very dark green (almost black) leather bound Sponsors' Edition of this classic biography of George Washington. The volumes are beautifully embellished with an embossed color-tinted scene of a statue of George Washington under a tree of liberty (?) with the rising sun shining over an empty battlefield in the background. The spines have a decorative brown stamped title panel. Illustrated with forty b&w photographic images and art reproductions with tissue guards. Upper page edges are gilt, other edges are untrimmed."Within eight years of the death of George Washington in 1799, John Marshall, who later became Chief Justice of the United States, published his authoritative five-volume biography. Justice Marshall’s biographer, Albert J. Beveridge, describes The Life of George Washington as “the fullest and most trustworthy treatment of that period from the conservative point of view.”"Marshall published his biography as a five-volume series between 1804 and 1807. The work is based on records and papers given to Marshall by Washington's family, but has received special renown because Marshall was an actual contemporary of Washington and served with him in the Continental Army." A fine addition for your bookshelf! Condition: Some wear with spots worn through at the edges of the leather especially the corners and spine ends, some dulling to the gilt upper page edges, otherwise in good condition with solid bindings and clean pages, hinges are sound but could probably use some conditioner to keep them from cracking in the future. Note: The letter/number at the end of the title line for this listing is just an inventory code for locating the book. Shipping Free Domestic Economy Shipping! Check out my other items! We have been sellers of antiquarian books for over 20 years, and our experience helps ensure quality descriptions of our rare and collectable books. Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free. We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.Customer Service:Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help. Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!Packaging:We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery:We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
