Description: $5 1882 Brown BackFirst National Bank of Princeton, MinnesotaCharter 4807 PMG Very Fine 35 An absolute trophy note from Minnesota, it has everything that a serious collector could want. At $105 outstanding in 1910, it is lowest outstanding amount of any Minnesota national bank, which is not too surprising, considering that the bank was open just 14 months in late 1893 and into the next year. That this note even exists at all is amazing. On top of that, this type is strongly appreciated by collectors, being a $5 Brown Back, perhaps the most widely collected by type collectors of large size nationals. And then there's the condition. My goodness, never truly circulated, but folded with storage, the note is crisp and bold, with gorgeous brown pen signatures. What a lovely note to behold! Fortunately for collectors, George Newbert, who pen signed this note as assistant cashier in 1893, had the foresight to keep an uncut sheet of these notes, all bearing serial number 593, with plate positions A through D. The sheet was cut and divided among his heirs over the years. These four notes, along with serial number 2, signed by different officers, represent all the recorded serial numbers on this bank. I've owned all 5 of these, as Princeton is in my home town area in east central Minnesota, but I've decided to share the extras with other collectors. I'm keeping serial number 2 and the A position note from sheet 593. That left plate positions B, C, and D for others. The B and D notes have already sold, one to the Higgins Museum in Iowa, leaving just one available to the first collector who fully appreciates the significance of this note.
