Many of my customers ask me: When should I change my home air filter? Or, How long do these air filters last? Or, Do these pleated filters last as long as Brand X? Those are excellent questions but there is no set answer that an honest filter salesperson can give you! Unless of course you can provide all of the information needed such as total volume of air that your unit moves (CFM), how often the unit runs, the locations of your return grilles, the amount of dust already in your home's air, the amount of shedding that your carpet has, how many people walk on that carpet, how much dust is outside your home that makes it to the inside, the brand of vacuum cleaner you use and what condition its filter is in......those and MANY more questions would have to be answered to give you a good answer as to how long your filter will last! I can however, give you some information to help you understand a filters life span and when it's time to change it out for a new one. The best and easiest way for most homeowners to know when to change their filter is simply by taking a good look at it. You don't want it totally clogged up and caked with dust / dirt, but you want to make sure that it does in fact have a good solid coating of dust on it before changing it out for a new one. If there's not, you're throwing away a good filter that's doing a good job of cleaning your air! I've seen the same exact filter in one home last 3 weeks and in another home last a full year! It really all depends on how must dust the filter has to capture. There really is no set time frame and anyone that tries to tell you that is not being honest and / or simply giving you a guideline. Think of the tires on your car. You don't change them out by the amount of time you have had them (unless the car is sitting in storage and the rubber is drying out and cracking) You change them out based on when the tread is worn down and/or the mileage you have on them. You could wear out a set of tires in a very short amount of time if you drive like a maniac and drive a lot of miles every year. Or, a set of tires can last you a very long time if you don't drive many miles per year and drive more sensible! Wouldn't you laugh if you went into a tire store and the salesman told you "These tires last 5 years no matter how you drive or how many miles you put on them!" You would know that simply could not be true! Another example would be going into the hardware store to buy a bucket to catch water for a leaky pipe. You can't buy a "5 hour bucket" or a "5 day bucket". The bucket will fill at different rates all depending on how how much and how fast the leak is! Filters are the same way, just like the bucket. It's time to change it out when it gets full and NOT by a certain amount of time. So again, take a good look at your home furnace / air conditioning filter every so often and see what it looks like. Once it's got a good solid coating of dust on it or you notice that airflow is becoming restricted, that is when it is time to change it. 2. Many people make the mistake of thinking, "I have clean air in my home now that I've installed a brand new clean filter". THAT IS NOT THE CASE! Many don't know, and most filter salespeople won't tell you that a filter actually becomes better and more effective at catching smaller particles as it loads up with dust! Filter ratings are based on the average capturing ability over the filters' lifespan. While replacing a clogged filter is something you have to do, you have to understand that as the filter loads with dust, it's doing a better and better job at cleaning the air in your home! The particle capturing ability is getting better and better over time until you get to that point where the airflow has been cut down enough to warrant a filter change. I believe in teaching my customers the proper way to use their filters and gaining their business for life rather than making a quick one time sale and providing misinformation. Other filter salespeople don't want you to know that changing out your filter too often only puts money into their pockets AND ends up giving you air that is not as clean as it could be.
