THE 3RD BATTLE OF WINCHESTER (THE BATTLE OF OPEQUON) ~ RECOVERED FROM THE RED BUD RUN AREA OF THE BATTLEFIELD ~ THIS AREA IS AT THE EPICENTER OF THE DAYTIME FIGHT (Highlighted in yellow on some of the maps, incorrectly named Reb Bud Run on several of them) ~ An interesting long brass reed from from an accordion (squeezebox) or concertina, harmonium, or pump organ of some type. It measures a full 3" long, so a fairly large for one for these, and 7/16" wide. On September 19, 1864, Maj. Gen. Phillip Sheridan advanced toward Winchester along the Berryville Pike with the VI and XIX Corps, crossing Opequon Creek east of town. The Union advance was delayed long enough for Maj. Gen. Jubal Early to concentrate his forces to meet the main assault. Veteran Union and Confederate divisions fought hard for several hours, but Early’s men were gradually driven back toward Winchester, anchored around the defensive works on the north end of town. By late-afternoon, the VIII Corps and Union cavalry turned the Confederate left flank and Early ordered a general retreat. The Union victory began a series of losses for Early’s army in the Valley from which it would not recover. Confederates suffered a costly defeat at the Third Battle of Winchester, September 19, 1864. The largest battle in the Shenandoah Valley saw 54,400 total troops engaged and 8,630 casualties, including over a quarter of the Confederate Army of the Valley. A provenance letter will be included. We include as much documentation with the relics as we possess. This includes copies of tags if there are original identification tags or maps, as well as a signed letter of provenance with the specific recovery information. All of the collections that we are offering for sale are guaranteed to be authentic and are either older recoveries, found before the 1960s when it was still legal to metal detect battlefields, or were recovered on private property with permission. Land on Battlefields that is now Federally owned, or owned by the Trust, was acquired after the relics were recovered.
