Description: Untitled Document2 antique West Chester State Normal School, West Chester PA Lapel Pins 10K & 14K Two antique lapel pins from West Chester Normal School, a state teaching college founded in 1871, which has morphed into it's current iteration, West Chester University. The larger pin is solid 14K gold, the smaller one is 10K gold. Both have been acid tested to confirm the gold purity, although the smaller pin is unmarked. Shown with a US penny to indicate relative size. The larger pin also has "16" on it's front, indicated indicating 1916, the smaller one is not dated but from the same estate. Note, the larger pin also has three initials on its back. As pictured. One of a series of institutions that evolved into West Chester University, the West Chester State Normal School opened in 1871 with the intention of training elementary school teachers. The Normal School became the first college owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1913. In 1927, the school was renamed as the West Chester Teaching College. The college continued to expand throughout the twentieth century, eventually becoming a state college in 1960.
