This is the part that holds the spring loaded rod down which holds the flapper open that allows the combustion air in for the flame. If this device gets too hot it breaks and the flapper snaps shut, disabling the heater. A dirty inlet screen inside the bottom of the combustion chamber or actual flammable vapors being drawn in can cause this to break.
