DESCRIPTION:For sale is this estate fresh and recently unearthed, scarce mid to late 19th century American antique New England primitive hand woven splint ash with sweet grass gathering basket, featuring hand carved, looped ash hardwood handle. The basket's nearly intact, with no bottom corner blow-outs or sidewall collapses. There's only minor instances of sweet grass loss along the double-hulled wooden rim, which the woven sweet grass strands hold firmly together. This, along with some very minor shallow staining found on the lower margins of the sidewalls, constitutes the only damage to this otherwise wonderful early New England primitive basket. It has absolutely wonderful, naturally aged wood color and patina, as well as naturally dry, matte surfaces. The hand carved, bentwood ash looped handle found at the top, shows clear evidence of prior use and a few stress splinters but is still intact. There are no amendments or repairs (old or new) to the basket. Great form and great color. A great early New England basket. Very pretty. CONDITION:Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
