Description: WILDCAT CAREER The University of Arizona's most memorable athletic tradition is the slogan "Bear Down." gven to Wildcat teams by John (Button" Salmaon, student body president and quarterback shortly before he died in 1926 following an automobile accident. Salmon's last message to his teammates, spoken to athletics director J. F. McKale was, "Tell them., tell the team to Bear Down." A memorial to Salmon was erected in 1986.
