A young Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls were in town to face the Washington Bullets. David Robinson, 21 year old Navy senior and College Basketball Player of the Year, had just played his last college game two days before, scoring 50 points in an NCAA tournament loss to Michigan. He was in attendance for a few reasons. Most importantly, he was considered one of the top picks to be selected in the upcoming NBA Draft. Chicago had 2 picks in the Top Ten and he was thinking they might select him. At this point there was still uncertainty about San Antonio choosing him #1 overall because he had a 2 year commitment of Navy service to complete before he could play any professional basketball. He was close enough to the arena from Annapolis, Maryland, and he was a casual Bullets fan from attending high school in nearby Virginia. As the story goes, a Bulls assistant had been talking to the hard to miss 7' 1" Robinson who was seated behind their bench. The assistant took out this pennant and had Robinson sign it before the game. David Robinson signed his college number #50, which also became his professional number. Unfortunately, the Bulls lost the game by 1 point and Michael Jordan, who had a very poor shooting game, was upset and did not sign the pennant. The pennant was signed by many other Bulls, including head coach Doug Collins and power forward Charles Oakley, among others. The June 1987 NBA Draft had David Robinson picked #1 overall to the San Antonio Spurs. The Chicago Bulls did make a draft day trade moving up a few spots to select Scottie Pippen #5 overall, and also selected Horace Grant #10.
