A native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he began studying ballet at 10, and went on to the Pennsylvania Ballet, a regional company (which has since acquired professional rank) as a teen-ager. Lavery got his first professional grounding in the Balanchine repertory as a member of the San Francisco and Frankfurt Ballets. His first opportunity to study under the master himself came in 1977 when he was hired by the New York City Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet. He was made soloist in March 1978 and a few months later, in September, (an unprecedentedly brief period as soloist) he was promoted to Principal.
