The older half of Frankfort, Kentucky's capital city, hugs the northern bank of the Kentucky River, while later residential streets - and the State Capitol -- occupy the southern section. The river was the reason for Frankfort's existence, since the town's founder, James Wilkinson, intended to use this river port for exporting goods to Louisiana via the Kentucky, the Ohio and the Mississippi rivers. Frankfort has been the center of state government since 1792, the year Kentucky joined the Union. Visitors can follow a "Boone Tour" leading to the magnificent Capitol building, the Governor's Mansion, a historic area known as the "Corner of Celebrities" and Daniel Boone's grave, and they can visit several distilleries in the surrounding counties.
