The Professors are exactly what the name suggests;all are professors of science at State College of Arkansas. The groupwas organized in the fall of 1967 and its first performance was givenat the Conway Kiwanis Club. In the past four years The Professorshave played for many functions in Central Arkansas including severalcivic club ladies’ night, the Junior Shakespeare Club, the grandopening of a livestock sales barn, and four consecutive performances atthe State College of Arkansas Miss Body Beautiful Contest.With a limited amount of time available for practice the per-formances are seldom polished, but are always spirited. Music is ahobby with The Professors, and even if no one else enjoys their act,they usually do. Perhaps it should be pointed out that this group doesnot represent the SCA Music Department. This announcement ismade at each performance at the request of the Music Department.The Professors’ interest in country music stems, in large part, fromtheir rural Arkansas backgrounds. In a very real sense they carry on thespirit as well as the repertoire of old time country bands. The music ismeant to be enjoyed by all concerned.RALVA BASS plays rhythm guitar on the album. Ralva is fromButlerville, Arkansas, in Lonoke County. Ralva holds degrees fromArkansas Polytechnic College and the University of Arkansas. He isAssociate Professor of Physics at State College of Arkansas. Hesings lead on “Mule Skinner Blues” and “New River Train.”NEAL BUFFALOE plays viola with the Little Symphony Orchestraat State College, but changes to the fiddle as a member of TheProfessors. Neal is from Craighead County, Arkansas. He receiveddegrees from David Lipscomb College and Vandervilt University,and he has been Chairman of the Department of Biology since 1957.Neal’s classical training is evident on “The Waltz You Saved For Me”on which he plays both the lead and harmony parts. Listen closelyfor his tenor on the chorus of “Aunt Dinah’s Quiltin’ Party.”JERRY MANION is from Beebe, Arkansas, in White County. Hereceived degrees from Harding College and The University of Miss-issippi, and has been Chairman of The Department of Chemistrysince 1965. Jerry plays the banjo and sings lead on “Tennessee” and“Quiltin’ Party.” You might listen for his tenor especially on “Blue-bird” and “Sunny Side of Life.”DENVER PRINCE is the man who lays down a solid beat on thebass. Denver is from Magnet Cove, Arkansas, in Hot Springs County.Denver holds degrees from Henderson State College, The University ofUtah, and Oklahoma State University; he has been Chairman ofthe Department of Physics since 1965. Denver sings lead on “Worriedman Blues” and “New River Train.”FARIL SIMPSON plays rhythm guitar and harmonica with TheProfessors, and does most of the lead singing. Faril is from GrantCounty, Arkansas, and is Associate Professor of Chemistry at SCA.He holds degrees from SCA and the University of Arkansas. Farilsings lead on “Bluebird,” ‘Sunny Side of Life,” “Salty Dog,” and“Whippoorwill.” Listen for his tenor on the chorus of “Whippoorwill”and his bass on the chorus of “Quiltin’ Party.”Although The Professors are basically a Bluegrass band (which, byconventional definition, means a string band that includes a banjoand no electrical instruments), they play a wide variety of countrymusic.
