This is an original press photo. Alabama-First a welding torch, then a fire. Flames that started from a welder;s torch virtually destroyed the vacant Birmingham Co. building Monday. Fire broke out in the building at the corner of 11th Avenue and 26th Street North while a welder was cutting steel beams in the roof. Five companies of Birmingham firemen were called to the blaze at 11:20 a.m. They found the building well involved in flames when they arrived, according to Deputy Chief Neal Gallant. Gallant said the building was being demolished, and a good bit of it already had been torn down when the fire started. At about the same time of the building fire, two more companies of firemen were battling grass fires in the same vicinity.Photo measures 9.25 x 7.25inches. Photo is dated 03-03-1970.
