Description: Fully titled, "Rights in Conflict : The violent confrontation of demonstrators and police in the parks and streets of Chicago during the week of the Democratic National Convention of 1968". From the front cover, "A report submitted by Daniel Walker, Director of the Chicago Study Team, to the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence". The report was publicly released on December 1, 1968 and is based on the Chicago Study Team's review of over 20,000 pages of statements from 3,437 eyewitnesses and participants, 180 hours of film, and over 12,000 still photographs. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL FIRST EDITION OF THIS REPORT. A mass market paperback was published, presumably an abbreviated version, but I don't know for sure. There was a "Braceland Brothers" paperback that is produced to be exactly like this one except for the blue tape spine wrap on this original. There were also E.P. Dutton and a Grosset & Dunlap hardbacks produced at that time. In any case, this is the actual report as issued by the Commission. Here is an expanded description about the episode and the report: "In August of 1968 an estimated 10,000 people arrived in Chicago to protest the war and events at the Democratic National Convention. They were met by about 12,000 police, 7,500 Illinois National Guardsmen, 7,500 Army troops and 1,000 Secret Service Agents. On 28 August 1968, images of police tussling with 3,000 anti-war protesters led to charges of police brutality. Daniel Walker, head of the Chicago Crime Commission, led an investigation into this incident based on official records, 180 hours of film, 12,000 photographs, and testimony of 3,427 eyewitnesses. This Report was the result of that investigation. The findings were extremely controversial at the time, as reflected in the warnings stamped on the cover against premature release. The Government Printing Office refused to print Rights in Conflict because it contained numerous unexpurgated obscenities, so the Chicago Study Team took it upon themselves to have printed 500 copies of the report." I should note that there are some copies available for sale online that include a "Not To Release Prematurely" stamp on front and rear covers that is cited in the quote above - this copy does not have such a stamp. Also, I am assuming this is one of the 500 copies of the report, if in fact this quote from the internet is accurate in this fact that only 500 were printed by the study group and not the Government Printing Office. There is no GPO copyright information in this copy and indeed, the "About the Report" page, shown in a listing photo, does discuss the use of "extremely obscene language" in the report. This copy is in VERY GOOD CONDITION, with very light corner curling on covers, light vertical crease front cover, no interior marks. There is a 7 page Summary, an 88-page photographic summary, and then the 233 page report, ending with a Supplement. BB6
