Rochester, new York. New "inside" information about Michelangelo's masterpiece "Pieta" was released by the Eastman-Kodak Company here April 23. Radiographs (pictures made with a source of radiation more penetrating than light) have revealed, for the first time, that the fingers on the outstretched left hand of the Virgin Mary were broken at some time in the past. Scientist George M. Corney (left) positions 14x17 inch film sheets behind fragile areas of the statue prior to a 10-hour gamma-ray exposure. Radiograph (right) indicates that interior pins were used to reassemble the fingers. Shipping experts used this information to determine the safest way to pack the statue for its trip to the New York World's Fair.
