Description: This 3.5" cello button was produced by someone in 1960 with their tongue placed firmly in their cheek to cover all the bases. It follows in the tradition of some famous "bartender's friend" or "salesman's safety pins" which show two men from the major opposing parties on them, so a person didn't have to choose which side they supported. We have a 1940 example with FDR and Willkie on it, our item 305621448577. The 1960 election pitted democrats John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson against republicans Richard M. Nixon and Henry C. Lodge. When the results came in it was so close that it was basically a tie, with JFK at 49.72% to Nixon's 49.55%. Even with all the voting irregularities surrounding the totals across the country, Nixon decided not to challenge the election and conceded the following afternoon. Think how history could have been dramatically changed if Nixon had challenged and then prevailed. No Dallas tragedy and also no Watergate. JFK had even joked during a primary that his father didn't want to spend the money to buy any extra votes. (Look it up). This cute pin, made when everything was so razor-thin close, should remind us today that you can -and should- like and respect everyone even when there are political differences. But this lesson is lost on most polarized younger folks today when we no longer teach them civics or history. They seem to have no respect for anyone's opinion but their own and act like they're in a tribe of apes. People get mocked - right now by the left - when they talk nostalgically about the American culture of the 1960's. But it definitely was a more friendly time for the greatest majority of people in this country, albeit filled with a lot of turbulence towards the end of the decade. OHO.
