It was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in 1710 when Delhi was still the capital of a flourishing Mogul empire. Singh was a keen astronomer--and he discovered that many astronomical tables being used at that time were defective and varying. So he built these stone instruments, so solid that even an earth tremor would not shake them and so enormous that there could be no error in calculations. Having built the observatory, he spent the next seven years preparing a new catalogue of the stars. It was through his tedious study that the tables and movements of the stars are correctly calculated. A partial view of the open-air observatory. In the foreground is the Jai Prakash, a complicated instrument designed by Singh himself. The sun shines through a small aperture in the structure on one day of each year, March 21, or the vernal equinox, Figures on a wall opposite gives the exact location of the sun's position. At right is the main instrument, a flight of stairs atop which is mounted a sundial. In background is the Misra Yantra, or mixed instrument. Photo measures 7.25 x 9.25 inches. Photo Is dated 1959.
