Description: Handsome fold-out 1957 Esso gas station road map of New York, printed more than 65 years ago. The map opens to 34" x 24" and has great detail on old highway alignments in the Empire State, with cartography by the General Drafting Company. There are inset maps of Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties, as well as the Finger Lakes region. The map was distributed by the Esso Standard Oil Company in 1957 and is dated in the legend. The front cover artwork shows a steamship passing in front of Boldt Castle in the Thousand Islands near Alexandria Bay. The map labels the fictitious town of "Agloe" — a "copyright trap" placed on Esso road maps by the General Drafting Company. The purpose behind using this nonexistent town was to reveal if rival mapmakers were copying the information. The name "Agloe" was a scramble of the initials of Otto G. Lindberg (founder of the General Drafting Company) and his assistant Ernest Alpers. They located the town at a dirt-road intersection north of Roscoe, in the Catskills. Condition: This map is in very good, lightly used condition, with no rips or tears. There's a small spot on the back cover and some faint pencil writing at the left edge of the map.
