Description: 1953 Topps - High # #246 Roy Face (RC),Pitcher Pittsburgh Pirates, ungraded-good/vg, front /back crease Elroy Leon “Roy” Face (February 20, 1928-) was one of the greatest relief pitchers in Major League Baseball history and set a still-standing record of a .947 winning percentage when he went 18-1 in 1959. Legendary Hall of Fame general manager Branch Rickey drafted Roy twice, once with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950 and then again with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1952. Face debuted in 1953, returned to the minors for the 1954 season and then cracked the Pirates lineup for good in 1955. By 1956, he established himself as one of the best relief pitchers around by appearing in a league leading 68 games – a Pittsburgh Pirates record. In 1958, Roy led the league in games finished (40) for the first of four times and in saves (20) for the first of three times. He also finished second in saves three times. Face’s 1959 season remains one of the best in MLB history as he set records for the most wins in relief (18) including the record 17 consecutive victories. He was an All-Star that season for the first time in three straight years. Roy pitched 16 years in the Majors with the Prates (1953, 1955-1968), the Detroit Tigers (1968) and the Montreal Expos (1969). In 1960, after the Pirates won their first National League pennant in 33 years, Roy posted three saves against the New York Yankees as the Pittsburgh beat the Bronx Bombers for the third championship in franchise history. Roy Face retired following the 1969 season having gone 104-95 with 877 strikeouts, 574 games finished, 193 saves and a 3.48 ERA in 848 games.
