1950s US Navy ORIGINAL PHOTO “oh now Tillie it’s not that bad” Ship USS Taylor

Description: From a collection of photos from an American Navy sailor named Roy Whitman, who hailed from North Carolina. Roy served on the USS Taylor (DD 468). Roy was in the Navy in the 1950s and his tours took him to locations in China, the Philippines, and Japan. I acquired several pictures of Roy and his time in the Navy at auction. Most of these pictures Roy inscribed on the back, detailing his experiences of service and sharing the realities of daily life aboard the vessel. Some more military history about the ship, which in itself is quite notable: USS Taylor (DD/DDE-468) was a Fletcher-class destroyer of the United States Navy, named for Rear Admiral William Rogers Taylor (1811–1889). She was laid down on 28 August 1941 at Bath, Maine, by the Bath Iron Works Corp.; launched on 7 June 1942, sponsored by Mrs. H. A. Baldridge; and commissioned on 28 August 1942 at the Charlestown Navy Yard near Boston, Mass. Taylor was the first destroyer to anchor in Japanese coastal waters at the end of World War II – one that, wrote Admiral William F. Halsey, "admirably performed every mission assigned to her." This is an authentic ORIGINAL black-and-white photograph, not a reproduction. Check out my eBay store for a curated selection of collectible vernacular snapshot photography!
